The # 1 obstacle to good singing

The biggest problem with potential singers today is simply a lack of heart and hard work.

Dion Chang speaks of the cult of celebrity, and my sister agrees: Idols, Pop Stars, The X Factor, Got Talent, etc., have created the expectation that anyone today can be a music superstar. While I'm not saying people cannot pursue it, the truth is that very few see the work that actually goes into creating that kind of voice.

There are a couple of kinds of people who come to me for lessons:

1. "I already know I can sing, so I'm not quite sure why I'm contacting you..." (they never last - if they come at all)
2. "I need help" (they sometimes stick it out)
3. The workers

Group 3 is rare, but if they work, they will become singers. Celine Dion didn't do it overnight. Patience is a key ingredient to good singing... Hard work will always trump talent.
